AXD 310 is the largest member of the AXD3x0 switch
family . Other products are the AXD 320 Multiservice Access Switch
and the AXD 340 IAD. The products are managed by the OmniVision Element
Manager system (often integrated with big standard SNMP-based management
systems like HP OV, IBM Tivoli, CastleRock SNMPc, etc.).
The AXD 310 Multiservice Switch features a distributed intelligence
and switching system. It has been designed to suit carrier integrated
access and concentration applications, where scalability and flexibility
in service offerings towards enterprise customers are important. The
switch may be deployed as part of the carrier infrastructure, or directly
on enterprise sites. In typical carrier applications the AXD 310 terminates
traffic from remote Integrated Access Devices (IADs) and delivers
voice and data streams to core network. Voice and data traffic may
be delivered as an integrated stream or separated onto circuit and
packet based interfaces as required by the application.
It is also well suited to pure enterprise applications, especially
as a multi-service switching node in enterprise regional and head
offices. In enterprise applications the AXD 310 can operate both as
a high-end Integrated Access Concentrator and as a transit switch.
The Integrated Access functions adapt customer voice and data traffic
for transport over packet-based IP/ATM trunks. The transit switch
functions support switching of voice and data traffic between remote
sites.
In most scenarios the AXD 310 performs grooming and traffic management
functions for remote Integrated Access Devices (IADs), PBXs and high-speed
data equipment in a large Enterprise network. Switching allows local
traffic to be off loaded from the carrier backbone switches or from
the customer voice and data switches according to the application.
On-demand allocation of trunk bandwidth between voice and data enables
trunks to be oversubscribed, reducing bandwidth usage and port costs.
Certain unique niche solutions (like e.g. high-density complementary
value-add protocol converter in ENGINE applications) are also available
with the AXD310.
As other members of the AXD 3x0 series, AXD310 supports a wide range
of voice switching protocols (ISDN, QSIG, DASS2 , DPNSS, etc.) in
a native enabling ready integration of customer and carrier voice
equipment into an IP/ATM based core transport network. Integrated
IP routing capabilities enable interworking between TDM, ATM and IP
environments.
VoIP signalling is now also supported in two formats:
- Standard SIP signalling is used for interworking with third party
standards based products and PSTN gateways.
- Proprietary signalling and transport mechanism called PBXoIP is
used to economically interwork PBXs with full feature transparency
over IP.

| Some of the tangible benefits the AXD310 delivers: |
| |
-
TDM, ATM, IP and Frame Relay support
for full featured voice and data integration (incl. advanced VoATM
and VoIP capabilities)
-
Inherently fault tolerant architecture
with Independent Switch Module Logic. The AXD310 is inherently control
logic redundant. A failure in a switch module does not imply failure
in other modules (N+1 logical redundancy)
-
Independent module logic combined
with hot swap capability allows switch modules to be removed or inserted
into the AXD310 chassis without service interruption
-
Distributed switching architecture
provides scalability and high availability with low entry-level costs
-
Traffic grooming and local switching
reduces access and backbone transmission costs
-
Soft configuration for ATM, IP, Frame
Relay, ISDN, Leased Line emulation services. Flexible configuration
allows a single platform to serve many applications
-
Complete range of interchangeable
physical interfaces for all transmission speeds from 64 kbps to 155
Mbps. All interface modules are the same as for the AXD320 for better
network flexibility and reduced network ownership costs
-
Digital signalling and switching plus
variety of protocols and interfaces for compatibility and smooth migration
of the existing PBX, video and data equipment
-
Rich set of digital PSTN/PBX ATM and
IP protocols, combined with unique protocol conversion capabilities
and true standards-based implementation allow smooth integration into
virtually any existing network environment
-
Support for VoIP and VoATM with advanced,
high-quality voice compression, echo cancellation, silence detection,
full transparency with minimum possible bandwidth for fax, modem and
DTMF tones, etc.
-
Support for standard SIP and tailored
"PBXoIP" VoIP protocols enabling 3rd-party interoperability
and full voice feature transparency
-
Fully integrated data handling for
Frame Relay and IP to ATM inter-working and HDLC/SDLC transport
-
ATM UNI 3.1 and 4.0, supporting connection
to backbone ATM services with PVC, SPVC, PVP and SVC
-
Highly featured IMA function for nx
E1 and nx T1 ATM Access.
-
ATM support on sub-E1 (Nx64Kbps rates)
over fractional E1 G.703/G.704, V.35 or V.11(X.21) interfaces with
optional ATM overhead reduction features (Econocell)
-
In-band and out-of-band SNMP-based
management access with a number of useful management utilities
